Kubb

(Translation with help from Wheaten)

Field: 5x8 or 8x10 meters.

Markers: The King is 8.5x8.5x28 cm, the sticks you throw (6 of them) are 4 cm in diameter and 28 cm long and, finally, the blocks (10 of them) 6x6x14 cm.

Start: Put the King in the middle of the field and the ten blocks along the shorter sides of the field. The two lines the blocks form are called the (initial) baseline for the teams A and B respectively.

The game: Team A starts at their baseline and throws their sticks one at a time towards the blocks of team B and tries to make them fall. The sticks must be thrown with an "under arm throw", no chopper/frisbee throw allowed.

When all sticks have been thrown, team B should throw back all blocks that team A have hit to team A's half of the field. The blocks should be placed upright where they stop. If a block should be thrown too far (off the baseline of the other team) it should be placed perpendicular to the baseline. A block that is thrown too short and drops on your own half of the field must be thrown another time. If it is thrown too short this time to it must be placed behind the King, at the length of a throwing stick.

The following film clip will show team A throwing 2 sticks (out of 6) and team B throwing back one block that has fallen. Team A to the left and team B to the right.

Now it is the other teams turn to throw the sticks. Their first priority is to hit their own blocks that are on the other half of the field. If team B succeeds with hitting every block that they have thrown into team A's half of the field then the game continues as described earlier (that is, team A throws over all blocks that have fallen to B's half of the field and then tries to hit as many of the other blocks as they can with the 6 sticks):

But team B can also fail with hitting all the blocks they just threw over:

Now when team A is in turn, they get to move their baseline forward to the block that is closest to the King (on their half of the field). Now it is much more easy to hit the blocks of the other team:

The team who "plays" at the moment must bring down as many blocks as possible from their opponents. The opponents throws the fallen blocks back where they are put back standing up.

Winner: When a team has brought down all blocks on the oppnents half of the field they get a chance to end the game by bringing the King down.

IMPORTANT: The King must be put down in the same turn as the last block is put down! If you fail the other team will win. If you have one stick left and one standing block you will have to wait for the next round because you can't hit both the last block and the King with the same (last) stick.

Trivia: This game is also know by the name "Kyykkö" in Finnish and "Trollkegeln" i German.
